Sunday Morning • Nerikomi
Our Sunday Morning series, when the studio light is the most beautiful, explores some more specialist ceramic techniques with a little more time and depth, whilst remaining accessible for complete beginners.
In this focused, two and a half hour workshop, explore the intricate beauty of Nerikomi — a Japanese term for a ceramic process that involves layering coloured clays to create patterns and motifs visible in cross-section and distinctly patterned ceramic-ware. Marbling clay traces its origins to ancient Egypt and although introduced to Japan around four hundred years ago, the modern term Nerikomi came to use in the 1970s as distinctly Japanese contemporary craft.
We’ll explore this beautiful craft here together, and you’ll learn how to carefully prepare, slice, and artfully assemble your clays to create a unique piece of your choice — such as a small bowl or decorative tray.
Workshop Notes
We offer this workshop once a month, on Sunday mornings evenings (10.00AM–12.30PM)
You can opt to have your work glazed in our glossy transparent studio glaze or leave unglazed. Your work will be glazed (if opted for) and fired for you after the workshop, ready to collect around a month later.
Please find our booking policy here.
